Wallpaper Measuring Guide

How to Calculate Wallpaper

At Beaumonde.co.uk, we understand that measuring and calculating wallpaper can be daunting. To make your wallpapering project as smooth and straightforward as possible, we’ve created this handy guide. Follow our step-by-step instructions to ensure you buy the right amount of wallpaper for your space.

Step-by-Step Guide to Calculating Wallpaper

Step 1: Measure Your Walls

  1. Measure the Width and Height of Each Wall:

    • Use a tape measure to determine the width and height of each wall in metres.
    • Record these measurements.
  2. Calculate the Total Wall Area:

    • Multiply the width by the height of each wall to find the area in square metres.
    • Add the areas of all the walls together to get the total wall area.

Step 2: Account for Doors and Windows

  1. Measure and Calculate the Area of Doors and Windows:

    • Measure the width and height of each door and window.
    • Multiply the width by the height to find the area of each door and window.
    • Add the areas of all doors and windows together.
  2. Subtract the Total Area of Doors and Windows from the Total Wall Area:

    • This will give you the net wall area that needs to be covered with wallpaper.

Step 3: Determine the Wallpaper Roll Coverage

  1. Check the Wallpaper Roll Dimensions:

    • Standard wallpaper rolls in the metric system are usually 10 metres long and 0.53 meters wide.
    • This gives you a coverage area of approximately 5.3 square metres per roll.
  2. Calculate the Number of Rolls Needed:

    • Divide the net wall area by the coverage area of one roll.
    • Round up to the nearest whole number to ensure you have enough wallpaper.

Step 4: Consider Pattern Repeats

  1. Check the Pattern Repeat Length:

    • If your wallpaper has a pattern, note the repeat length, which is the distance before the pattern repeats itself.
  2. Adjust for Pattern Matching:

    • Add an extra 10-20% to your total wallpaper requirement to account for pattern matching and wastage.

Example Calculation

  1. Room Dimensions:

    • Wall 1: 4m (W) x 2.5m (H) = 10 square metres
    • Wall 2: 4m (W) x 2.5m (H) = 10 square metres
    • Wall 3: 3m (W) x 2.5m (H) = 7.5 square metres
    • Wall 4: 3m (W) x 2.5m (H) = 7.5 square metres
    • Total Wall Area = 35 square meters
  2. Doors and Windows:

    • Door: 0.9m (W) x 2.1m (H) = 1.89 square metres
    • Window: 1.5m (W) x 1.2m (H) = 1.8 square metres
    • Total Area of Doors and Windows = 3.69 square metres.
  3. Net Wall Area:

    • 35 square meters (Total Wall Area) - 3.69 square metres (Doors and Windows) = 31.31 square metres
  4. Number of Wallpaper Rolls Needed:

    • 31.31 square metres / 5.3 square metres per roll ≈ 6 rolls (round up).
  5. Adjust for Pattern Repeat:

    • Add 10% for pattern matching and wastage: 6 rolls x 1.10 ≈ 6.6 rolls (round up to 7 rolls)

Final Tips

  • Always round up: It’s better to have a little extra wallpaper than to run out mid-project.
